720p is a HD format so you are getting HD. HD will be either 720 or 1080.

The resolution is set by the video, not by a setting on the TV or a cable. Component cables work well, HDMI will keep the signal digital all the way to the TV. You may see a slight improvement, but probably not much.

I think the problem is actually Rogers Cable. Cable and satellite companies are notorious for drasticly compressing signals to make room for more channels. Compression will reduce detail and can cause problems with fast motion (sports).

If you have an antenna, try hooking that up for grins. I'll bet it looks a lot better. How to change a resolution of a Samsung 40%26quot; LCD LN40B550?
If your HD box doesn't have HDMI outputs, then it's a very old box. All the new ones have HDMI. If the cables you are using are red/green/blue component, they will carry HD, so that's not the problem, tho you should request a newer box with HDMI if you want it. You are paying for it.

That said..you need to go into the HD box's set up menu, call Rogers for instructions, and be sure the component line is set to 1080i. 1080i is as high as broadcast signals go.

Your tv will display 1080p always. The 720p you are seeing is what the tv is receiving, not displaying. HD tvs upconvert all signals to their native resolution, so that happens automatically.

Your pic should look clear. Sometimes the problem is a weak signal. You may have to have cable service check the signal at your cable box and have them boost it if necessary. How to change a resolution of a Samsung 40%26quot; LCD LN40B550?
A few tips.

-First, let me assure you of one thing, new cable styles have SIMPLIFIED set ups, not complicated them.

-The guy from Rogers said you don't need HDMI because he brought you the old box, and was probably far to lazy to walk downstairs to his truck and swop it for a new one with HDMI.

-HDMI not only improves picture (slightly, but it does) but it avoids the use of 5 plugs (red, blue, green, red, white). It keeps your sound and picture all digital all the time in one single convenient cable.

-Rogers only broadcasts signals in 720P and 1080i (for the untrained eye, they are the same thing, not to be confused with 1080P), so when you see 720P in the top, that is what is being sent to your TV......try a blu ray and see what it says.

-This might seem basic, but I will say it anyways. Are you watching an HD channel? Some people fail to understand that certain channels are broadcast in both standard and high deff, but you must go to the high deff channels to see it formatted in 16:9, and to get it in HD.

Lastly, you don't change your tv's resolution. Think of your TV as simply a screen, capable of 1080P or less. What ever you plug into this screen, it will display that resolution on the screen. You change resolution from the device outputting the picture (ps3, bluray, ect) not the screen displaying it.
