How do I change my HD resolution from 480 to 1080?

I just bought a Toshiba hdtv and right now the hd is set at 480i i guess.. and someone told me I should switch it to 1080i for a better hd picture, but i'm not sure how?

I have u-verse from at%26amp;t as my cable provider and there's hd channels so I wanna have the better picture, how do I switch it?How do I change my HD resolution from 480 to 1080?
You don't change it; you can't. The resolution is set by the video itself, the set is only reporting what you feed it.

480i is basically old style analog video. If you feed the set 480i, you will get squarish video and the TV will report 480i. Same with 720p and 1080i.

The video is what is it and you can't change that. You need to make sure that your cable company is providing HD service to you (sometimes that's an extra cost) and that you have your cable box connected with either an HDMI cable or component cables. How do I change my HD resolution from 480 to 1080?
HD tvs can display at their native resolution only. So no matter what you send to your tv is will upconvert a 480 signal to 720 and it will downconvert a 1080 signal to 720. So there is nothing on the tv for you to set.

Your problem is probably that you need to get an HD cable box from at%26amp;t. If you are using a regular digital box, and not an HD one, you can't get HD channels. And also, be sure you connect an HD cable box to your tv with either HDMI or component (red/green/blue) cables, as only those two can send HD signals. How do I change my HD resolution from 480 to 1080?
first off, a tv is nothing but it a display meaning it cannot change the input signal to a different resolution.

so if the input signal is just 480i, then the tv will display in 480i.

also the connection makes a difference.

are you using a hdmi cable from all of your sources? (ex. cable box, dvd or blu ray player, etc....)

and all 720p tv's can display 1080i images. you will need to change the native resolution on the tv though through the menu to determine which will be displayed. depending on the size of your tv, a 720p image may look better than a 1080i image. How do I change my HD resolution from 480 to 1080?
There is nothing to do with the TV, but a lot to do with your u-verse box.

a) Use either the component or HDMI output of the set-top box.

b) Buy appropriate cables (component or HDMI)

c) Connect to corresponding TV ports

d) Set the output of the set-top box to either 720p or 1080i
